“You can’t argue with lived experience.”
Here’s the full clip from my interview on NBC News Now with Joe Fryer. We covered everything from the recent SCOTUS ruling to the historic report out of the Vatican this week, and why I decided to write Conversion Therapy Dropout.
My book wasn’t the only book about surviving conversion therapy that released on May 5. Davin Malsarn and I both released books that tackle the harms of conversion therapy from different lenses: Davin’s from the Buddhist lens in his fiction, and mine from the Evangelical world in my memoir.
Despite our different backgrounds and experiences, the themes of trauma, faith, and ultimately finding freedom were so deeply shared.
I’m grateful to share pub date with Davin and for the opportunity to join him in conversation on writing about the aftermath of conversion therapy with Lit Hub.
By day, I helped these churches reach millions. By night, I was piecing together my own identity as a gay man, quietly wondering if there would ever be a place for me in the very ministries I was helping build.
I loved this conversation with my friend Kit Morgan on The Liberated Porch Podcast, where I share how sobriety was a key part of my recovery from moral injury caused by conversion therapy.
“The biggest lesson I had to learn is that God's lack of an answer to my prayers to change me was an answer, because there was nothing about me that needed to change.”
I sat down with Josh Patterson on the (Re)thinking Faith Podcast and Dr. Leah Robinson to discuss my eight-year journey through conversion therapy and the paradox of building digital communities for megachurches while being unable to fully belong myself.
In this interview, I urge faith communities to speak out against the current state and growing resurgence of this abusive practice, and talk about how churches can be more affirming and inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Windy City Times was like a road map to help me navigate the new world I found myself in after leaving conversion therapy. I was grateful to have the opportunity to chat with Jake Wittich about my book and why I’m looking forward to being back in Chicago to promote my book.
I cannot believe I had the opportunity to sit down with Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness on their podcast, Getting Better. We got into it all — including our shared experiences growing up in small-town Illinois.
I loved this conversaion with Anne Helen Peterson on the Culture Study Podcast where we discussed my years in conversion therapy and answered some great listener questions.
Check out my first piece with Harper’s Bazaar on my reflections on the SCOTUS decision and what it means for conversion therapy survivors.
Check out my interview with Complexified, a podcast of Religion News Service.
Check out my interview on the Love, Take Two podcast.
My statement on the SCOTUS ruling was quoted in CBC’s coverage of the rally at the Stonewall National Monument.
I sat down with Tyler Huckabee of Sojourners to discuss being a ‘conversion therapy dropout’ and why my faith is stronger today than it ever was in the trenches of ‘reparative’ therapy.
None of the hundreds of people I met in conversion therapy received the miracle we’d been promised. In fact, it has been discredited by every major medical and mental health organization as ineffective and harmful.
I spoke with Kathryn Post of Religion News Service to share my reaction to the Supreme Court siding with an evangelical Christian therapist who argued Colorado’s conversion therapy ban restricts her right to free speech.
I had the chance to speak with ABC News’ Linsey Davis about my experience in conversion therapy and its effects after the Supreme Court struck down Colorado’s conversion therapy ban.
I am so honored to co-author this op-ed for TIME with Garrard Conley on the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in the case of Chiles v. Salazar, which is debating conversion therapy bans in Colorado.
We would like to tell you why bans on conversion therapy are necessary, and how LGBTQ conversion therapy is harmful even for straight people.

In this op-ed for Religion News Service, I explore John Paulk’s return to the public eye through his new podcast, Atonement, and the ongoing battle against conversion therapy.
"Rodriguez’s brutal honesty is affecting, and he powerfully draws out how the evangelical church weaponizes Christian doctrine to 'other' gay people... The result is an unflinching account of finding a faith that fits."
"Rodriguez writes earnestly and honestly about a traumatic topic without sacrificing humor or hope, which is a rare talent... a compelling journey of faith, healing, and finding purpose."

I am incredibly honored to announce that my TIME Magazine article, "I Spent Eight Years in Conversion Therapy Mistaking Shame for Faith," has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Online or Print Journalism Article.
I was honored to be on BBC Newhour with Shaun Ley on International Day to End Conversion Thearpy. It’s not an easy story to share, but I hope that by telling the truth about what conversion therapy actually does, fewer LGBTQ+ youth will ever feel like it’s their only option.
"The language of conversion therapy may have changed, but the message hasn't. It is the same script rewritten in softer fonts. You're welcome, but only if you agree to disappear." — The Advocate
I remember reading TIME magazine at my grandparents’ house when I was a little kid. I never imagined I’d one day see my own story in it.
"Timothy’s story... is a testament to resilience and courage. Tune in to hear about his upcoming book, Conversion Therapy Dropout, and his ongoing advocacy for queer people of faith. Don’t miss this transformative conversation about faith, identity, and how to take the steps needed to live one’s truth.
I’m so glad to share my conversation with Kristen Bear on the Creative Sobriety podcast. This was actually my very first podcast interview about the book, and it felt right to start there.
